Sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability

Everyday choices. A journey that began in 2015.

At Kuwera Eco Lodge, caring for our surroundings is part of welcoming you.
Our commitment takes shape in the water we offer, the energy we use and our connection with nature and the local community.

LESS SINGLE-USE PLASTIC

32,000
plastic bottles avoided
More than 800 kg of plastic packaging avoided
Since opening in September 2015, we have provided complimentary purified drinking water with unlimited refills for our guests and staff, along with reusable glass jugs in every guest room. Refill your bottle and join us in reducing single-use plastic, every day.

Estimate as of October 2026: approximately 32,000 guests, allowing one 1-litre bottle per guest, regardless of length of stay.

Energy in everyday life

BIOGAS IN OUR KITCHEN

From kitchen scraps to cooking fuel

Our biogas system transforms organic kitchen waste into gas used for cooking.
In operation for around two years, it gives these scraps a useful second life.

Kitchen scraps → Biogas → Cooking

Solar hot water

Solar water-heating systems serve every guest room and our kitchen. Introduced in our early years, they help reduce the electricity needed to heat water.

Room for nature and local traditions

We retained existing trees and vegetation wherever possible when developing the lodge. Our two traditional rooms use earth, timber and local building methods.
Our garden is maintained without routine use of chemical pesticides, and its produce joins locally sourced ingredients in our kitchen when available.

Our farm, grown with care

At Kuwera, our connection with nature extends to the food we grow. We cultivate our farm using organic growing practices, caring for the soil and the plants through everyday attention.

When available, our harvest finds its way into the lodge’s kitchen, bringing fresh ingredients grown here to the meals we prepare for our guests.

A small farm that brings together the land, our kitchen and the experience of staying at Kuwera.

Connected to our community

We encourage local employment and work with people from nearby villages. When we host traditional dance performances, the local children and youth group receives a performance fee. We also support local temples and community initiatives according to their needs and our means.

Explore at a gentler pace

Complimentary bicycles invite you to discover the nearby area.
Garden and cooking experiences offer a closer connection with local life.

Our journey continues

We are exploring solar photovoltaic panels to generate electricity and aim to monitor water, energy and waste more closely, helping us guide our next steps and share our progress.

Thank you for being part of these everyday choices.
